Do you notice how your teeth hurt when it is really cold? If you wear braces, the sensitivity can be even more pronounced.
Cold Weather and Braces: What Happens
When the temperature takes a nosedive, it can affect how your braces feel. That is because cold water causes teeth to expand and contract. Even when you don't have braces, you will notice tooth pain or sensitivity. When you wear braces, this can lead to discomfort and ongoing concerns about pain and sensitivity.
What We Recommend for Brace Pain Relief
To prepare for cold weather, we often recommend that orthodontic patients get a fluoride treatment. This application frequently helps with any tooth sensitivity. We also suggest that orthodontic patients take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. In addition, wax may be recommended for additional brace and/or tooth pain relief. When you go outside, it is best to place a scarf around the mouth so you stay warmer. Also, always wear a warm knit cap, as most of the heat in your body escapes from the head. Cover your ears with the cap, as doing so will also make you more comfortable and reduce any pain or sensitivity.
Spending Time Outdoors
If you do not spend a great deal of time outdoors on a fall or winter day, any orthodontic discomfort will only be temporary. Therefore, it will not be any major problem. However, you may be affected more if you play a sport or work outdoors for a living. If your pain does not subside once you get inside in a warm environment, we insist that you give us a call. That way we can find out the underlying reason for the discomfort.
