Mistakes We Tend to Make as Adults When Brushing Our Teeth
Posted on 8/24/2020 by Dr. Wendy Spektor
Dental care is one of the most important (if not the most important) aspect of our overall health and general wellness. Good oral hygiene and regular routines are key to keeping your mouth healthy and clean.
Failure to do so can lead to a whole host of problems and if ignored long enough, can lead to other serious conditions completely unrelated to the mouth. The best way to avoid these types of problems is by practicing proper brushing. Here are a couple of ways where many adults fall short:
Not Spending Enough Time
We know that nobody likes to have to spend a full two minutes at the sink but this is what we have learned it takes to have an effective and thorough brushing session. Adults are long passed the days where being bored is an excuse not to do anything, especially something as important as brushing. If you find yourself continually short-selling your time with the toothbrush, try setting a timer for two minutes or listening to your favorite short song.
Using the Wrong Brushing Technique
This one is also very common, although not for the same reasons. This problem usually comes from people simply not knowing any better. The proper brushing technique employs small, circular motions on the front and rear teeth. Of course, this means for two full minutes.
Also, it's very important to make sure you get your tongue too. That technique consists of one long stroke from the back of your tongue to the tip, removing the plaque and film rather than just moving it around with a back and forth motion.
