With thoughts of a new school year absolutely ruining the tail end of a perfectly fine summer vacation, families are girding for nine more months of learning — all of which requires shopping for new clothes, books and binders.

But what’s often left out of the equation is a semi-annual dental checkup, and our own Wendy Spektor, DDS says taking care of this necessary business can best be performed before school gets underway —when there’s more time to schedule an appointment. Dr. Wendy was asked by GalTime.com, a new online magazine designed for women by women, to write an article about the importance of a checkup before school starts.

Here is Dr. Wendy’s back-to-school dental health checklist:

• Dental Records: If it’s time for radiographs, get them done. These allow your dentist to look for cavities and other problems, as well as check the status of young wisdom teeth.
• Sealants: Dentists now have something called preventive resin fillings that are a newer alternative to sealing and protecting a student’s new back molars. Ask your dentist about them!
